There are many national ensembles in Mongolia. The ensemble is the best one. It was established in 1989 by a group of outstanding artists. Its name also has interesting history. I think that Mongolian all period of people know this drawling song, it is Tumen ekh, which was very famous folk long song. Thus, they decided to name “Tumen Ekh”, which is the phrase of “Head of the whole thing”. The ensemble is home of 40 professional artists eminent in Mongolia and abroad. They perform not only on stage habitually, but also tutor and do research in various institutions. During the last 20 years, Tumen Ekh Ensemble has visited to more than 30 countries showing to the people of the world the unique, attractive, colorful and wonderful Mongolian performances. Throat singing, contortion, folk long and short songs, folk dance and tsam mask dance which are well-known arts in the world are performed in its stage. Throat singing is a difficult skill requiring special ways of breathing. It is considered musical art not exactly singing. In 1940, Mongolian state circus was established, since that time female artists started to perform contortion. The tsam is ancient religious ritual which reflects Buddhist teaching through images. This ceremony was first introduced to Mongolia in the early ninth century. Its performing hall which name is “Hotol baysgalant harsh /Hall of joy for all/” is designed for well-being and comfort like Mongolian traditional dwelling. Foreign and internal guests can watch performers closely. The ensemble is awarded the Bronze Medal by Japanese Mask Dance Contest in 1997, “Mongolian Image” award from the Trade and Industry Chamber of Mongolia in 2006.
